OEF – Operation Enduring Freedom

As Wikipedia has defined it, Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) refers to the War in Afghanistan (2001–present) – “the intervention by NATO and allied forces in the ongoing Afghan civil war. The war followed the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, in an effort to dismantle al-Qaeda and eliminate its safe haven by removing the Taliban from power.”

This Memorial Day, I wanted to do something to reflect on how lucky I am to live in a country where I can feel free and to honor those who have died to protect that freedom. I recently heard some news on OEF, so I browsed for information on the web and stumbled upon a very interesting source of data, Visiting this website, I found a wealth of information on the service members who died during OEF. I found the data so interesting that I decided to take this data, flow it through Tableau, and create an interactive infographic. The idea behind my interactive infographic is that a typical infographic may have flashy pictures and a nice design, but it does not allow the user to explore the entire data set and see how certain elements influence and relate to other elements within the data.

Please remember, as you interact with this data, that these service members lost their lives trying to help others in the world. War is a delicate subject for many so let’s keep those opinions aside, but do remember the people depicted in this visualization are real and its important to respect their tremendous sacrifice in effort to try and help their fellow man and woman both here in the US and around the world.
